1. Bảng đại từ quan hệ

Từ	Thay cho	Chức năng	Ví dụ
who	người	chủ ngữ (theo sau là động từ)	the man who called
whom	người	tân ngữ (theo sau là S + V), sau giới từ	the man whom I met · to whom
which	vật, công ty	chủ ngữ / tân ngữ, sau giới từ, sau dấu phẩy	the report which you sent
that	người / vật	chủ ngữ / tân ngữ. Không dùng sau dấu phẩy hoặc sau giới từ	the car that I bought
whose	sở hữu (của ai/cái gì)	luôn theo sau là danh từ, không có mạo từ	a firm whose profits grew
where	nơi chốn (= in/at which)	theo sau là mệnh đề đủ	the hall where we met
when	thời gian	theo sau là mệnh đề đủ	the day when it opened
what	= the thing(s) that	không có danh từ đứng trước	What we need is time.

Nhìn sau chỗ trống: động từ → who / which / that; danh từ → whose; S + V thiếu tân ngữ → whom / which / that; mệnh đề đủ → where / when.
Nhìn trước: người hay vật? Có dấu phẩy không (có → loại that)? Có giới từ không (có → whom / which)?
Không có danh từ trước → what.
